The Salem Area Community Betterment Association will be the host of a unique exhibit: Key Ingredients: America by Food, on loan from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. between August 14 and September 24, 2005. This exhibit is made possible by a special program of the Missouri Humanities Council.
This exhibit explores the connections between Americans and the food they produce, prepare, preserve, and present at the table. It is a provocative and thoughtful look at the historical, regional and social traditions that merge into everyday meals and celebrations. Key Ingredients also looks beyond the home to restaurants, diners, and celebrations that help build a sense of community through food.
This exhibit will feature a selection of artifacts, photographs, and illustrations that examine the evolution of the American kitchen. The Key Ingredients: America by Food exhibit will also demonstrate how food industries have responded to the technological innovations that have enabled Americans to choose an ever-wider variety of frozen, prepared, and fresh foods.
“This exhibit will feature items, pictures, and local memorabilia that is unique to Dent County and surrounding communities. If any citizen has local pictures or items that they would like to loan to this exhibit, please call the SACBA office.” explained Key Ingredients Committee Chairman, Keith McDonald.
This once-in-a-lifetime exhibit will be held in the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center, located next to the Visitors Center on Main Street in Salem. Special events that are planned include:
